Course: Oxy-acetylene Welding

Course Description
This course is Oxy-Acetylene Welding where students learn cutting and welding using oxy-acetylene equipment. They will learn the proper settings and adjustments for cutting and welding. Students will learn the basics of fitting for oxy-acetylene welding and setup for various welding positions. This course prepares students to transition to the TIG process.

Certificate
Completion of this course certifies proficient understanding of oxy-acetylene welding tools and techniques based on a score of 80% or higher on competency exams. A Certificate of Technical Competency is available upon request.

Competencies (skills you will learn)

  • Describe flame cutting and welding
  • Describe an oxy-acetylene equipment setup and the function of each component
  • Explain the safety procedures associated with flame cutting
  • Demonstrate how to flame cut
  • Demonstrate how to set up and weld mild steel
  • Demonstrate four types of welded joints in any position on thin-gauge, mild steel sheet
  • Make satisfactory welds on small diameter pipe and tubing in four different positions
  • Demonstrate the effects of torch angle, flame height, filler metal size, and welding speed on gas welds

This is a competency-based course offered in open-entry/open-exit format.

The estimated length of this course is 20 hours.
Actual course length will depend upon your schedule and your ability to master the subject material.

Specific Course Admission Requirements
Students must be at least 16 years old to enroll in this course. Also, the Welding Introduction and Safety Course must be completed prior to this course.

Course Location and Schedule
Granite High School (3305 S. 500 E., SLC): Monday - Thursday, 5 p.m. - 8 p.m.

Tuition and Fees
Tuition is based on the number of enrolled classroom hours. Adult full-time student tuition at the SLTATC is $4.00 - $1.30 per hour depending on the number of hours enrolled. High school students are exempt from tuition, but are responsible for course and program fees and the cost of textbooks.
