Course Description
This course is Gas Tungsten Arc Welding where students learn "TIG" welding, also known as Tungsten Inert Gas welding. They also learn the proper settings on various brands and models of arc welders. Students will learn the techniques for setup for various welding positions and how to weld steel, stainless steel and aluminum.
Certificate
Completion of this course certifies proficient understanding of TIG welding tools and techniques based on a score of 80% or higher on competency exams. A Certificate of Technical Competency is available upon request.

- Describe the purposes of the various tungsten types and shapes
- Demonstrate the proper method of reshaping tungsten
- Describe the functions of different shielding gases
- Demonstrate how to correctly set up a GTA welding machine
- Demonstrate the effect of alloy oxides on the performance of tungsten
- Demonstrate how to set the correct amperage for each type and size of tungsten
- Demonstrate how to set the correct gas flow times and rates
- Demonstrate proper GTA welding torch manipulation techniques
- Demonstrate a variety of GTA welds in different positions

This is a competency-based course offered in open-entry/open-exit format.

Specific Course Admission Requirements
Students must be at least 16 years old to enroll in this course. Also, the Welding Introduction and Safety Course must be completed prior to this course.

Course Location and Schedule
Granite High School (3305 S. 500 E., SLC): Monday - Thursday, 5 p.m. - 8 p.m.
Tuition and Fees
Tuition is based on the number of enrolled classroom hours. Adult full-time student tuition at the SLTATC is $4.00 - $1.30 per hour depending on the number of hours enrolled. High school students are exempt from tuition, but are responsible for course and program fees and the cost of textbooks.
